"Absolute disgrace": Sam Newman fumes at Eddie McGuire's exit

Controversial media personality Sam Newman has claimed the way Eddie McGuire has been treated is an "absolute disgrace" after the Collingwood president handed in his resignation on Tuesday afternoon.

McGuire faced copious amounts of criticism after his response to a damning report that accused Collingwood of fostering "systemic racism", which ultimately forced him to step down immediately rather than at the end of the season as planned.

The 56-year-old was on the verge of tears as he fronted a press conference to announce his resignation.

“I tried my best and I don’t always get it right, but I don’t stop trying,” McGuire said. “Today, effective immediately, I step down from the presidency of the Collingwood Football Club.

“From the moment I became the president of the Collingwood Football Club on my 34th birthday back in 1998, my sole motivation was to heal, unite, inspire and drive a new social conscience, not just into this club, but sport and the community in general and build an organisation that would be a place for opportunity for all people.”

Newman was a longtime panellist on The AFL Footy Show alongside McGuire and the former Geelong ruckman delivered a scathing response to his comrade’s departure.

“It is an absolute disgrace what is happening to Eddie McGuire,” Newman told FIVEaa Adelaide on Tuesday.

“Eddie McGuire is a great person, a great member of our community here in Melbourne, and in fact, he’s a great Australian.

“He might have erred like everyone might have erred, but he’s tried his heart out to rectify what has gone on at that club.

“It is completely unfair what they’re doing to him, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

“Why would you single him out? He has tried his hardest. He has set up Indigenous foundations at that club.

“This has nothing to do with racism … he is being condemned absolutely unfairly by all and sundry, because they think it’s a great, politically-correct, point-scoring opportunity.

“They’re invested in chaos and division.”

McGuire and veteran AFL reporter Caroline Wilson have endured a love-hate relationship over the years, but the journalist believed the Collingwood boss "hubris" contributed to his downfall.

“There were so many things over the past week or so that just went from bad to worse for him,” Wilson told 3AW on Tuesday.

“Even today, unfortunately, there were just a few signs of the hubris that brought him down in the end.

“Everything we say is underlined by the fact we know that he did so much good and that the club, in many ways, is in such a better position ... than when Eddie found it.

“He came to Collingwood so determined to unite all the factions and you couldn’t say, last week, that’s what he’d done.

“You’d have to say last week they were a club savagely divided.

“I think that it’s sad that it’s ended like this for him.

“From people I’ve been talking to today, the one thing they were all united on, in the end, was that he had to go and they couldn’t possibly get past this until he did go.”

Heartbreaking double tragedy behind Eddie McGuire’s resignation

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire and former AFL star Luke Darcy have opened up about their exit from Triple M’s Hot Breakfast show.

The pair both made headlines across the nation after it was revealed they were leaving the popular breakfast radio program.

McGuire was forced to deny rumours that he and Darcy had been sacked.

He instead announced that his family had been behind his decision to walk away from Triple M after 11 years.

Both McGuire and Darcy both had their own personal tragedies that pushed them to step down.

McGuire's mum Bridie died just two days after Darcy sadly lost his father - former VFL football player, David.

“The self-reflection and losing someone close to you … you re-evaluate things that are important and, for me, it always comes back to family,” Darcy said.

“It had a massive impact on me, and a part of my decision making (to leave breakfast radio) as well.

“We need to work and pursue great things like the Hot Breakfast to look after our families, but at the same time, you don’t want to miss the point of life. I’m massive on that life balance part.

“This year, we’ve had the chance to stop, reflect and look at our situations.”

McGuire said his mother's passing helped him understand Darcy's situation.

He went on to say his own commitment to his family made the decision to quit easier to make.

“Darce’s father was such a great friend of the show, and so well loved. My mum passed two days later, but we knew it was imminent. My view is, If you don’t learn from this year, you won’t learn from much.”

McGuire got the opportunity to spend quality time inside the AFL's Gold Coast hub with his son Joe shortly after he lost his mum.

“I spent a lot of time with my son Joe, and spent no time with my son Xander and my wife Carla who were back in Melbourne. You think, ‘Hang on, these are the things that matter,'" McGuire said.

“We came to work every day for our family. “We don’t regret that we weren’t there to drive them to school. That would be great in a perfect world where money falls off a tree.

The Collingwood president revealed he’d always promised his family he would quit breakfast radio once his sons had both finished school.

“Those closest to me have always known that I continued with breakfast radio while my boys were at school and now my youngest has finished it’s time too for me to finish up a wonderful 11 year run with a 4 am alarm,” McGuire said last week.

The Triple M Hot Breakfast has been losing audience share as of late.

The show is down 0.9 points to 5.8% in recent ratings but McGuire denies it is due to him and co-host Darcy's departure.

“They (Triple M) were keen to look at planning for the next five years, and we thought, ‘This is a good way to finish,'" McGuire told the Herald Sun.

“But, in my mind, it was probably since June I’ve known it would be the last year.”

Eddie McGuire threatens to sue Facebook over “erectile dysfunction” story

Eddie McGuire is threatening to sue Facebook over a fake news article that claimed the broadcaster was promoting a cure for erectile dysfunction.

A story appeared on Facebook reporting McGuire had partnered with US talk show host Dr Phil to create a product called "TryVexan".

"I've tried Viagra, I've tried Red Ginseng, I've tried Cialis. TryVexan blows them all away," McGuire is quoted as saying.

The fake news story, which was published under a bogus version of men's magazine GQ's website, said the "natural remedy" contained monkey head mushrooms and horny goat weed.

"I am so confident in the product Dr Phil and I have created that I am offering free samples to our viewers," the story claims McGuire said.

But yesterday the Collingwood president said the story was "completely bogus".

"Needless to say, I'm not CEO of that company nor have I imbibed any of their product or have known anything of it," McGuire told 9NEWS.

"My legal advisers today tell me it's some company out of Panama via Los Angeles, and somehow it ends up on Facebook without any checking and suddenly it's out there for public consumption."

McGuire said he believed Facebook had a "duty of care" to ensure content on its platform was truthful and accurate.

"How Facebook can actually publish this in Australia has got me beat," he said.

McGuire said he'd never even met Dr Phil and warned people to steer clear of the product.

"The last thing I want anybody to do is to think, because my image is involved in this, that this drug is safe," McGuire said.

"I've got no idea whether this drug is safe or otherwise but certainly in my situation, I've got nothing to do with it and I recommend, given this is their modus operandi, to stay as far away from it as you possibly can."

Axed MKR contestant Sonya reveals what started the controversial dinner party fight

Following one of the most controversial nights in My Kitchen Rules’ history, axed contestant Sonya Mefaddi has revealed on social media what led to the nasty dinner party row.

On Instagram and Facebook, Sonya said that that there was a reason why she acted the way she did, and she would do her best to explain it without breaking her contract with Channel Seven.

Sonya claimed that during her time in the “MKR bubble”, she was called insults such as “ugly fat b***h” and "black ****" while filming.

Sonya said that these insults gave her a flashback to her childhood, where she was regularly bullied for her race and weight.

“One memory in particular which I’ll never forget was having the contents of my school bag tipped into a bin because of my background. I remember feeling shocked and angry and also feeling so hurt. Fast forward to the 21st century and who would have thought taking part in a cooking competition would bring back all those cruel, hurtful and extremely upsetting words online?” she said.

When she heard those similar insults while filming she said, “Those words struck a chord with me and really hurt which clearly showed.

“It’s been hard to apologise for that reason because it was a two way argument with name calling started by others. Did I handle that moment the best? No.”

The axed contestant also said that editing played a key role in her negative portrayal.

“It’s been a really tough road seeing myself being portrayed in such a horrible light,” she wrote.

Sonya continued her post by apologising for the behaviour that viewers had to witness.

“The words I said were out of line and don’t reflect my values or who I’ve grown up to be as a person and I am personally truly sorry,” she said.

“I have respect for all the teams in the competition, the long hours of filming, practising and writing out recipes isn’t easy.

“We all experienced the MKR bubble together and emotions are heightened, words are said, reactions are given and in this instance that was all that was shown — our reactions.”

She then gave her followers a glimpse into the way the saga has impacted her life, with both Sonya and Hadil receiving criticism and death threats as the show aired.

“I hope people can be more sensitive to the mental impact that this has had on me, our fellow contestants and our families and realise we have feelings and the constant bullying is not OK. Love, Sonya x.”

A post shared by SONYA MEFADDI (@sonyamefaddi) on Apr 21, 2018 at 1:26am PDT

Sonya’s post followed judge Pete Evans announcement that the NSW besties would not be returning to the show after they were excused from the table by Manu Feildel following their attack on contestants Jess and Emma.

“We’ve been left with no other option but to end Sonya and Hadil’s involvement in the competition,” Pete Evans said.

“But right now, only seven teams remain. “We take full responsibility”: MKR’s Sonya and Hadil finally apologise

My Kitchen Rules villains Sonya and Hadil have finally apologised to fans after their verbal tirade and threats to other teams saw them get kicked off the show on Wednesday.

The NSW best friends took to their joint Instagram account on Thursday to apologise to viewers for their behaviour – but slammed Channel Seven who they claim “twisted, provoked and fuelled” the incident.

“We take full responsibility for our words that came out of our mouths and we apologise,” the pair wrote in a lengthy post.

“There is more to the "scandal" than meets the eye, however we take full responsibility for our words that came out of our mouths and we apologise.

“Like any reality TV show, no one but the people on-set filming 10-14 hour days know exactly what goes on behind the tears, the tension, the smiles, the reactions and the words exchanged.”

The pair however criticised Channel Seven, blaming the network for airing the fight.

“We will not apologise to the network who twisted, provoked and fuelled this entire situation,” they said.

“We do however wish to apologise to the viewers for having to witness and endure the situation which should have never been allowed to go to air. We wish the remaining teams in the competition the best of luck. Sonya and Hadil x.”

The new post comes after the pair had slammed the network in an earlier post, accusing producers of “bullying” them and using them “for ratings”.

The best friends also questioned the integrity of the cooking show and even hinted at a conspiracy to make them “look bad” because they were the “best cooks” on the show.

“We've been extremely disappointed with our experience and treatment by the show,” they wrote in an earlier post.

“Imagine how we feel watching the episodes back when the episodes have been extremely tampered with (the amount of editing is insane).”

They added: “12 to 14 hours of footage... majority of airtime is on us because they want to build us up for ratings which equal $$ to the network.

“I assure you people have acted a lot worse than us on the table, that hasn't been aired.

“We will both be happy when we're off air because MKR have bullied us enough, constantly targeting us because we were unfairly dismissed and the only way they could justify this was to make us look so bad!”

They also pointed fingers at other teams who they said were just as bad as them

“As for some of the other contestants who played up to the drama, they wanted us out because they knew we were the hardest team to take out in the competition. How convenient to get rid of the best cooks in the comp,” they said.

Sonya and Hadil also claimed that they only cooked “seven times in four months of filming”.

“We thought we were signed up to a cooking show, boy were we wrong!” they wrote.

Manu speaks out after removing Sonya and Hadil from the show: "They could've won the competition!"

My Kitchen Rules judge Manu Feildel has spoken out about controversial contestants Sonya and Hadil, after asking them to leave the dinner table for inappropriate behaviour.

"I think they were strong competitors, yes indeed," Manu told TV WEEK.

"They knew how to cook very, very well. I wish they would have just zipped it and got on with the cooking.

"They didn't have to go that far to win the competition."

The best friends from NSW were excused from the table after an intense dinner party where they insulted sisters Emma and Jess.

"It was just poking the bear, basically, and it just wasn't nice," Manu explained.

The departure of Sonya and Hadil is the first time in MKR history that Manu and co-judge Pete Evans have sent off a team because of their behaviour.

Manu explained that they’ve never even come close to a situation like this in the past.

"It's a show I've been working on for nine years now and it's a great show to work on.

"We've always had a good time, a good laugh. A couple of fights here and there, but it's never been taken that far."

Manu said that he’s had no contact with either Sonya or Hadil since the end of the show.

"Just purely because I don't want to be involved in their story," he said.

"It's not what my purpose is on the show. I'm just there to judge the food and score the dishes and get someone to work hard until they win the prize."

Manu said he has no regrets about his decision to remove the girls.

"The only regret is I wish everyone would have acted like adults, responsible adults, and just got on with the competition. That's the only regret."

MKR’s Sonya and Hadil tell their side: “Australia doesn’t know the truth”

It’s no secret now that NSW besties Sonya and Hadil are the team that will be unceremoniously booted off My Kitchen Rules on Wednesday night’s episode.

The many promos for the show have certainly painted the pair as villains, with many fans accusing the team of bullying other contestants on the cooking competition.

But now Sonya and Hadil have shared their side of the story, saying they were “extremely disappointed” with their experience and treatment on MKR.

Taking to Instagram, the duo wrote: "No one would have any idea what we’ve gone through.

"We will both be happy when we’re off air because MKR have bullied us enough.

"What the network has done to us has been extremely disappointing and a complete nightmare."

They also accused the show of editing them to make them look like villains.

"Imagine how we feel watching the episodes back when the episodes have been extremely tampered with (the amount of editing is insane)," they wrote.

"I assure you people have acted a lot worst than us on the table, that [hasn't been] aired. Why do you think we are mentally ok with what this circus of a cooking show has created out of us?

"Because we know the truth and take comfort in that."

The NSW-based duo said that they were "constantly targeted" and that they weren't the only team who "played up the drama."

"Everyone on that table could have been edited to look bad regardless, I stay honest, I call the food the way it is," they said.

"I am not in control of how we are portrayed but we lived it and can sleep well knowing the truth.

"Australia doesn't know the truth and if they did they would feel ashamed that they are attacking two women who are the victims."

Sonya and Hadil says they accept they are not blameless, but also they stand by everything they said on the show.

"We own everything we’ve said and there will never ever be an apology from us," they said. "We didn’t do anything wrong."

"People will see this one day, when we are given a chance to speak the truth."

Eddie McGuire opens up about his dramatic weight loss

Media personality Eddie McGuire has lost a dramatic 20kg in a matter of weeks by following a strict Chinese herb diet.

The Collingwood president will showcase his transformation when he makes a return to the AFL Footy Show this Thursday.

The 52-year-old followed the 101 Wellbeing Program by Dr Shuquan Liu, which was the same diet Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull used several years ago.

In the first two weeks, Eddie followed the diet plan of replacing meals with three cups of herb tonic.

Eddie explained that in the third week, he was able to incorporate half a cucumber and a 50g serve of chicken into his daily meal plan.

The results of the diet were immediate with Eddie shedding 15kg in the first weeks, but he admitted to the Herald Sun that the program was “extreme”.

He explained that he had let himself go throughout the past decade and he was left unimpressed with how he looked.

“I have probably been the classic case of the person who has put on one and a half kilos a year for the past 10 years and suddenly you look out the window one day and you see a fat bloke looking back at you and you realise it is a mirror,” he said.

Eddie claimed that he experienced no negative side effects whilst on the diet.

“It has taken all the heat out of my body, I feel great, I did not feel tired at any stage, and did not actually even feel hungry, believe it or not.”

He has continued to drop weight since finishing the diet and has now lost a total of 20kg, despite going on holidays where he says he “ate for Australia”.

“The next stage for me is to get myself physically fit again and keep the discipline up and make sure I don’t plonk it (the weight) back on,” he said.
